Aerial urban grids recreated in recycled paper
From cartographic collages to multimedia map works, we love us some map-related art around here. Oregon-based British artist Matthew Picton adds some more enthralling creations to our collection with these stunning paper sculptures of cities made of books and other textual materials. The works play on the idea of the city as living organism. Explains Picton in his artist's statement:
The city exists in memory as a complex hybrid of visual impressions and forms. Impressions are drawn from personal experience, film footage, and literary narrative; creating an inevitable blurring of the boundaries between fact and fiction. The sculptures, while fictional creations, are in part documentary records and the line of truth being firmly attached to the cartographic evidence.
Each piece is constructed from materials that relate to the respective city grid being depicted. "Venice" consists of cut-paper excerpts of Thomas Mann’s "Death in Venice," while "Dublin" is made of James Joyce’s "Ulysses" and "Dallas" is made with film stills that show JFK's route on the day of his assassination.
