Historic Grand Canyon images 'rephotographed' to create stunning works of art

Mark Klett and Byron Wolfe spent five years exploring the Grand Canyon to create Reconstructing the View, a series of landscape images combining the artists' own photos with old postcards, anonymous Flickr images, and 19th century images shot by photographers such as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. For the project, spotted on Faith Is Torment, the pair mined the wealth of images of the canyon then took their own photos in the same precise locations. Using digital postproduction techniques, they merged the images to bring the original photos into dialogue with their own. The results, as you can see, are pretty interesting, offering some pertinent commentary on the role that photographers play in defining American places.

The images from the project are collected in a book published in 2012 by University of California Press. Looks amazing.
