People probably don't think of wintry Minneapolis as a biker's paradise. Turns out it is.
In fact, the City of Lakes has a strong commitment to fossil fuel-free transportation, with over 120 miles of bikeways, lots of bike amenities and a strong, vibrant bicycling community.
That's what prompted Bicycling Magazine to name it America's top bike-friendly city.
"I was so excited by this news, I overinflated my bike tires," said Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak. "We've come a long way from when the first bike lanes were striped on our streets back in the 1970s. Biking is now a much better way of getting around town."
The magazine notes that the midwestern city has extensive infrastructure in place for cyclists, including bike-pedestrian bridges, greenways and a bike-share program set to launch in 2010.
Los Angeles, are you listening?
