Richard Mosse: Infra

  • Posted by Neil Simonton on February 13, 2012 in Photography
  • "I raised my head. The offing was barred by a black bank of clouds, and the tranquil waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed somber under an overcast sky--seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness."

    - Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness

The Congo, Africa's volatile beating heart, has for centuries represented a vast unknown to the Western imagination. Irish photographer Richard Mosse expands on this subject with Infra, a collection of photos shot in the embattled region using a discontinued color infrared film called Kodak Aerochrome, originally developed as a military surveillance technology. The film renders the lush green landscape in psychedelic hues of purple, red, and hot pink.
