    This handsome floating shelf from Sprout Home offers a nice alternative to the boring veneer shelves you might find at IKEA or Home Depot. The functional ledge smartly repurposes teak railroad ties from Colonial-era India, giving it a fascinating historical narrative that serves as an interesting talking point for guests. (Not that we advocate either imperialism or teak forestry, but in this case the damage is already done.) The shelves are polished and waxed to a deep sheen that slightly offsets the rugged factor.
