The late visionary architect Nadir Khalili (1936-2008) made it his life’s mission to create sustainable shelter for the world’s poorest people. Under the banner of Cal-Earth, the nonprofit he founded to further his quest, Khalili invented “superadobe” technology, which uses on-site earthen material and local supplies of sandbags and barbed wire (usually in good supply in war-torn areas) to build cheap, sustainable homes.
