China to Build World's Largest Offshore Wind Farm

  • Posted by Mitchell Flexo on October 26, 2010 in Energy
  • China is the global leader in wind turbine production and one of the world's largest producers of solar and photovoltaic energy. Now, the country seeks to asserts its position as the world's renewable energy leader by constructing the world's largest offshore wind farm in Bohai Bay, a few hours from Beijing.

The Bohai Bay project will produce 1,000 MW of electricity, usurping the current title-holder, Thanet Wind Farm in the North Sea, which produces 300 MW. The project is being carried out by the state-owned China Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), who are experts in offshore energy production.

The project has already received $2.2 billion from the Chinese government, which is currently planning on building enough offshore wind farms to power the East Coast of the U.S. four times over.

Any U.S. politicians paying attention? Anyone?
