Continuing our ongoing obsession with Iceland -- the land of bubbling lava, geothermal energy, and beautiful people with blue eyes -- these muted travel pics offer a beautiful glimpse at the northern island nation. They were shot by Debora Mittelstaedt, who was raised in Cologne, Germany and studied photography at University of Essen before settling in New York City in 2006.
"I've always been really interested in places which are unusual and not that popular," says Mittelstaedt, who assisted photographer Albrecht Fuchs in Germany. "I'm drawn to any subculture or lonely place where the people live in special circumstances, like Iceland, where the sun doesn't shine for months and nature is incredibly present. The idea of living in those environments fascinates me and frightens me at the same time. I have a certain vision of that place—the place becomes magic for me and is emotionally charged and so are the people who live there. I follow a story, which I make up, and search for things that fit into it."
