Electric Vehicles Enter Federal Fleet

  • Posted by Mitchell Flexo on May 25, 2011 in Transportation
  • With Obama calling for the federal government to lead the way in sustainable practices, government officials have been getting down to business. This week, the feds announced the purchase of the first electric vehicles in the federal fleet. The purchase involved 116 cars -- a smorgasbord of Chevy Volts, Nissan Leafs, and Think Cities -- which will make their ways to 20 different agencies.

Martha Johnson, administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration, said the program will save 29,000 gallons of gas, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 260 tons, and save taxpayers more than $109,000 every year.

This is a smart move not only from an environmental standpoint, but also a fiscal one. Especially since the U.S. is trying to position itself as a leader in EV technology moving forward.
