Jim Denevan is an modern day renaissance man. Famous for his mega-sized land art works, the Californian artist is also an accomplished chef whose traveling Outstanding in the Field project connects people with local ingredients and producers.
Denevan's art is all about nature's ephemeral moments. “For me, marking the earth is an opportunity to measure and consider what is directly at hand and what is cosmic,” he says. “The big curves I cut in the earth are intimate and superfluous. They can be considered or ignored. They are left.”
For his latest major work, the frozen surface of Siberia's Lake Baikal presented an ever-shifting, snow-covered canvas for Denevan's geometric land drawings. Photographer Peter Hinson was there to snap pics of the work and process.
Look out for SHFT's collaboration with Denevan and Outstanding in the Field for Toyota's 10 Years of Prius Anniversary Celebration on 10-10-10.
