Utilities Brace for Mass Market EVs

Ladies and gentlemen, (silently) start your engines. After two decades of fits and starts, the electric car revolution is finally upon us.

The Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf are both slated to start hitting dealerships next month, and combined sales are expected to surpass 30,000 over the next year.

Meanwhile, electric utilities don't know whether to lick their chops or wring their hands. A plugged-in EV pulls as much electricity as a small home, so utilities are scrambling to upgrade equipment to avoid potential power outages.

"It's like you're about to have a baby," says Mike Rowand of Duke Energy. "You know it's going to be good, but you also know there's going to be some throw up and some dirty diapers, and you just hope that it's something you are prepared for."

Umm, okay.
