Murray Carter, Master Bladesmith

Born in eastern Canada, Murray Carter traveled to Japan at the age of 18, a move that changed his life forever. There, a chance encounter at a knife shop led to a six-year apprenticeship with a Master Bladesmith. After a six-year tutelage, he became the 17th generation Yoshimoto bladesmith. Today, after more than 25 years learning the craft, he runs Carter Cutlery on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon, where he lives with his family. Local film production company Cineastas recently put together this video about Carter’s history and philosophy. It’s a beautiful ode to craft, personal growth, and the importance of pursuing one’s dreams. Watch above.
