108 Years of Herman Miller

  • How a furniture-making legend was made, in 108 seconds

You can't talk about mid-century modern furniture without discussing Herman Miller, the Michigan-based manufacturer of some of the era's most iconic pieces. But the company's history runs deeper than the mid-20th century. 108 years deep, to be exact. To commemorate the anniversary, Dutch agency Part of a Bigger Plan created this animation that packs 108 years of design history into 108 seconds. The video is part of a broader campaign hyping the launch of Herman Miller's WHY platform, exploring what makes the company tick:

Before we decide what we do and how we do it, we must first ask “why?” It is in this spirit of inquiry that we approach the stories we tell on WHY. For us, design is never just about a finished product. It is a narrative that extends from the designer’s vision to the people it touches and places it transforms. With WHY, we invite you to discover why we do what we do at Herman Miller.
